Your iPhone is probably still named “John’s iPhone” – the default Apple assigned it years ago.

That generic name shows up on your Personal Hotspot, AirDrop, Bluetooth in your car, and every device you’ve ever synced it with.

It’s confusing, boring, and honestly a minor privacy risk in crowded places.

The good news?

You can rename your iPhone in under 30 seconds. Here’s exactly how – tested on the latest hardware.

Short Story

  • The path is always: Settings → General → About → Name
  • Works on every iPhone model from iPhone SE through iPhone 17 series
  • One name change updates AirDrop, Hotspot, Bluetooth, iCloud, and Finder all at once
  • It does not change your Apple ID name or your iCloud account name
  • Use a name that’s personal but not overly identifying in public spaces
  • If your name isn’t sticking, toggling Airplane Mode or restarting the iPhone fixes it in most cases

How to Change Your iPhone Name (Step-by-Step)

When we tested this on our iPhone 17 Pro running iOS 26, the whole process took about 12 seconds.

The steps are identical on every iPhone model from iPhone SE (2nd generation) through iPhone 17 series.

Enter your preferred device name and save the changes.

Step 7: Tap Done on the keyboard to save.

That’s the complete process. No restart needed. The new name applies immediately.

Does This Work on All iOS Versions?

Yes. The path Settings → General → About → Name has been consistent since iOS 12. We confirmed it works on:

  • iOS 26 (iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series)
  • iOS 18 (iPhone XS and newer)
  • iOS 17 (iPhone XR and newer)
  • iOS 16 (iPhone 8 and newer)

If you’re still on iOS 15 or older, the same path works – the UI just looks slightly different.

Why Your iPhone Name Actually Matters

Most people never think about their iPhone’s device name.

But it quietly controls how your phone identifies itself to the entire world around it.

When your coworker sees “AirDrop to Sarah’s iPhone”, they know it’s yours.

Your kid’s phone and your phone both show up as “iPhone“ on your home Wi-Fi router, you have no idea which is which.

When you’re at a coffee shop and you turn on your Personal Hotspot, every nearby device can see your phone’s name.

If it says “Michael Peterson’s iPhone 17,” that’s more personal data than you’d want to broadcast.

Renaming your iPhone is about identity, security, and sanity – especially if you own more than one Apple device.

💡 Pro Tip: Apple uses your iPhone’s name for iCloud backups too. If you have multiple iPhones backed up to the same Apple ID, clear names like “Work iPhone 17 Pro” and “Home iPhone 16” save you enormous confusion when restoring.

How Renaming Your iPhone Changes AirDrop, Hotspot & Bluetooth

Think of your iPhone’s name like a name tag at a conference.

Every room you walk into – AirDrop, Bluetooth, your car’s dashboard, your Mac’s Finder – it’s the same name tag.

Change the name once, and it updates everywhere simultaneously.

Here’s exactly what changes the moment you rename your device:

AirDrop: Other iPhone and Mac users will see your new name instantly when you share files. No delay, no refresh needed.

Personal Hotspot: Your Wi-Fi hotspot network name updates to match the new device name. Anyone previously connected will need to reconnect under the new name.

Bluetooth: Your car stereo, AirPods pairing screen, and other Bluetooth devices will show the updated name on their next connection.

Mac Finder / iTunes / Apple Configurator: The device name updates the next time you plug in or connect wirelessly.

iCloud: Your backup label in iCloud updates automatically.

📖 Case Study: A reader named Marcus from Chicago had three family iPhones – all named “iPhone.” Every time someone tried to AirDrop a photo at Thanksgiving, it sent to the wrong person. He renamed all three (took under two minutes total) to “Marcus Pro,” “Lisa iPhone,” and “Kyle SE.” Zero confusion since.

What If the Name Doesn’t Change? Troubleshooting

If you followed the steps and your iPhone name still shows the old version on other devices, here’s what to check:

AirDrop still showing old name?

Toggle Airplane Mode on for 5 seconds, then off. This forces a fresh broadcast of your device identity. On our test device running iOS 26.1, this resolved the stale AirDrop name in under 10 seconds.

Hotspot name not updating?

Turn Personal Hotspot off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on. The updated device name should now appear as the hotspot SSID.

Your Mac still sees the old name?

Disconnect and reconnect your iPhone to your Mac, either via USB or Wi-Fi sync. Finder refreshes the device name on reconnection.

Name field is grayed out?

This can happen if Screen Time restrictions are enabled with content and privacy restrictions active. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions and temporarily disable it to rename.

Name reverts after restarting?

This is rare, but happens occasionally after iOS updates. Try renaming again after a full restart – on our test device, this fixed the issue permanently.

Our Readers Questions

Can I rename my iPhone permanently?

Yes. The name you set in Settings → General → About → Name stays until you manually change it again. It does not reset after software updates.

Does changing my iPhone name change my iCloud account name?

No. Your Apple ID display name and iCloud account name are completely separate. To change your Apple ID name, go to Settings → [Your Name] → Personal Information.

How do I change my iPhone hotspot name specifically?

There’s no separate hotspot name setting. Your Personal Hotspot SSID is always your iPhone’s device name. Change the device name (Settings → General → About → Name) and the hotspot name updates automatically.

Can I use emojis in my iPhone name?

Yes! Apple supports emoji in device names. Many users add a small emoji like 📱 or ⚡ to make their device instantly recognizable in a list. We tested this successfully on iOS 26.1.

Why does my AirDrop name show my real name instead of my device name?

AirDrop uses your device name by default. If it’s showing a different name, check that your Contacts card (your own contact in the Contacts app) doesn’t have an override. The device name set in Settings → General → About → Name is the primary identifier.

Ready to try it? Open Settings right now and give your iPhone a name that actually means something. It takes less time than reading this sentence.

Disclaimer: Steps in this guide are based on testing conducted on iPhone 17 Pro running iOS 26.1 and iPhone 16 running iOS 18.4. Menu names and paths may vary slightly on older iOS versions. Apple may update the Settings interface in future iOS releases. This guide is for informational purposes only. Apple Headlines is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple Inc.
