Stansted 15: judge says he will not jail activists

Judge says culpability of those convicted is not high enough to warrant immediate custody

The judge in the case of 15 defendants convicted of endangering an airport by blocking the takeoff of a charter plane has suggested that he is unlikely to jail any of them.

The judge, Christopher Morgan, said that even in the cases of defendants Alistair Tamlit, Mel Strickland and Edward Thacker, who were previously handed suspended sentences for aggravated trespass for an environmental protest at Heathrow airport about a year before the Stansted action, their culpability was not high enough to warrant immediate custody.
