Attorney general’s legal advice seen as crucial in convincing MPs to back PM’s Brexit deal

The attorney general, Geoffrey Cox, has published updated legal advice suggesting the last-minute concessions Theresa May wrung from the EU27 “reduce the risk” that the UK is trapped indefinitely in the backstop – but only in one narrow set of circumstances.

Cox has been a key figure in the negotiations with Brussels in recent weeks, and his legal advice is regarded as crucial in convincing Brexiters to back the prime minister’s deal, as she brings it back to the House of Commons on Tuesday.
